Como melhorar a cláusula Limit no MySQL


Tente isto:
SELECT post_id
    FROM posts
    ORDER BY post_id DESC
    LIMIT 0, 10;

Paginação via LIMIT não faz muito sentido sem encomendar de qualquer maneira, e deve resolver seu problema.
mysql> explain select * from foo;

Em relação aos seus últimos comentários sobre o comentário, junte-se. Você tem um índice em comment(post_id) ? com meus dados de teste estou obtendo os seguintes resultados:
mysql> alter table comments add index pi (post_id);
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.15 sec)
Records: 0  Duplicates: 0  Warnings: 0
